A great way to grow your faith is to read good Christian writers. There are always books of pseudo spirituality that run the gamut from seeing angels to biblical conspiracy theories, but it’s far more fruitful to read time-tested spiritual writers whose faith is contagious.
Few writers are better to read than C.S. Lewis – the greatest Christian apologist of the 20th century. An “apologist” is a person who defends and explains the basic tenets of Christianity.
Again and again, C.S. Lewis brought reason to bear upon faith as he explored Christianity with remarkable creativity and a clear writing-style. During the coming year, St. Thomas’ will offer a rich array of opportunities to get to know Lewis better and have his faith inspire our faith.
Thanks to a generous gift from a family foundation, we will be bringing scholars and teachers to our church to help us learn more about Lewis’ life and writings and his impact on Christianity. We hope to offer one-man plays and movies and even a pilgrimage to visit Lewis’ home, church and university in Oxford as well as other famous Christian sites in England.
Summer is an ideal time to read. So, please consider joining one of our summer reading groups devoted to Lewis’ writings. You can order any of Lewis’ books on your own or purchase them at the church office or at church on Sunday mornings. If you wish to read and discuss one of Lewis’ books, please sign up to join one or more of our following Lewis reading groups:
The Great Divorce – Sundays, July 15, 22 and 29 from 9-9:50 a.m. in the Rittenhouse Room
Letters to Malcom Chiefly on Prayer – Sundays, August 12, 19, 26 from 9-9:50 a.m. in the Rittenhouse Room
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Wednesdays, September 12, 19, 26 – 7:8:30 p.m. in the Hutchinson Room in the Emily Norris Carey Learning Center
Stroud Hellebusch, Roger Clark, Geoff Jackson, Katie Worrall and I will take turns facilitating the book studies. Together, our faith will grow, and it will impact the lives of those around us. RSVP Anita Burke if you would like to attend at firstname.lastname@example.org.
With Eastertide blessings,
