People love and respect you more than you will ever know. Your love, kindness and compassion have earned you the respect of others. So, when you invite them to do something or take advantage of something that means a lot to you, they listen and will often follow.
So, I’m going to ask you something bodacious! I want you to invite someone to church and to follow up your invitation and work with that person until he or she becomes an active, thriving, joyful member of our church. It will bring you great joy in the process. I know. I’ve done it.
You are only here because someone did this for you. Studies show that for every person who comes to church because of the sermons or the music or the historic building, seven people come simply because someone they knew and trusted invited them. Your invitation is the most powerful tool to bring others to God, a faith community and a worship experience that can transform their life and our lives together.
Pastor Rick Warren says imagine that you are in heaven and someone comes up to you and says, “I’m here because of you.” Suddenly, you realize that you invited this person to church and helped him or her to get involved and started on a transformational faith journey. And they owe that journey to you for inviting them and nudging them to do something important than changed their entire life.
So, here’s how to do it. Simply invite someone to church. Offer to pick them up and drive together. Take them to the Sunday Faith Forum afterwards. Introduce them to a few of your friends and take them to lunch afterwards. Hear their thoughts about church. Tell them about your faith journey and what this church means to you. Listen to their story. Then, invite them to come back and follow up.
I did this with two friends over the summer with whom I play tennis. Now both of them and their families are worshipping with us. I did it naturally during a conversation in between tennis games. And now their families and they are blessed. So, take the plunge and invite someone you know to experience what gives you so much hope, faith and inspiration. Share the gift!
With love and prayers,
